The History of AC part 2

wp_historyDo you remember our blog on the history of AC?  Well we’re back with the history of AC pt.2!  Though we covered lots of ground in the previous blog, there is still plenty more to go over when it comes to how notably historic AC has been.

Before the 1902 invention of an Air Conditioning machine by Willis Carrier, there were a few discoveries of methods that helped to, for lack of a better phrase, conditioner air.

These include the 1758 discovery from Benjamin Franklin (among others) at Cambridge University that alcohol can be evaporated to cool the air.  That was followed by a few other successes including the 1830s machine that Dr. John Gorrie built – his machine incorporated ice compression and air that blew the ice’s coolness outward.  Dr. Gorrie, a physician, thought that his invention might be able to help out in cooling the interiors of buildings such as hospitals! He got his machine patented, but it was not successful in the sales department.

As a solid follow-up to the work of Dr. John Gorrie, it was in 1902 that Willis Carrier invented a device that cooled the air.  Instead of the ice mechanism that Dr. Gorrie created, Willis Carrier’s device uses coils!  His initial designs lead the way for what we consider a modern air conditioning unit.

Now air conditioning services are an American standard.  As of 2011, almost 90% of all homes constructed now include air conditioning as a feature.  You can’t argue with how much people enjoy it!  And, as mentioned in the first part of this series, air conditioning accounts for many modern advancements in society including medical breakthroughs!  Without being able to control the air, people were held back from controlled experiments.

Pretty interesting stuff, right? We wonder if there is still enough historical moments in AC’s past that would warrant a “part 3” down the road.  Probably!  And, if not, given some more years there definitely will be.  Air conditioning is a wonderful invention that not only gives us comfort but opportunity.  It’s something many take for granted but plenty of others (like many of our customers) do not at all take for granted, because they know just how helpful it is to have an energy-efficient AC unit.
