You may have heard of SEER. It’s an important classification system that will tell you how much your current or future AC unit is going to be utilizing in way of resources.
Simply put, SEER is a rating of efficiency. Read on for more details!
What does it stand for?
SEER means Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The higher the number, the better your HVAC unit will perform in the long term regarding saving energy and being better for the environment. If you hear of a SEER with a very small number (like 5 or 6) then you need to be wary of that particular unit. So, if that’s the case, what are correct numbers for this classification system? Great question.
What Number Should I Get?
Try to get at least around a 15 SEER when having an ac unit installed. You are going to hear a lot of numbers from some experts being tossed around but the truth is, if somebody tries to sell you a unit that has a SEER under 13, then tell them to get lost!
Regulators in the United States have made a requirement of SEER for it to be at least 13. There’s a good reason for this – they want to make sure people are not getting ripped off and also that the environment is taking less of a hit. It works out great for everyone.
The types of AC units that are carried at CSS, Carrier, have a rating from 13 all the up to 21. You can read more about Carrier specifics here. Price tags obviously vary by SEER number but remember, the higher your SEER number is, the more long-term saving you are going to do. It’s an initial cost versus ongoing cost choice.
From this energy.gov page that was written about one year ago:
“Today’s best air conditioners use 30% to 50% less energy to produce the same amount of cooling as air conditioners made in the mid 1970s. Even if your air conditioner is only 10 years old, you may save 20% to 40% of your cooling energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient model.”
